We recently visited Milan, where we stayed for a day before deciding to visit Como. There are many ways to reach Como, including booking tours with travel agencies or renting a car, but to keep our budget low, we decided to use public transport. In this blogpost I recount our budget-friendly journey from Via Marco D’Agrate in Milan to the Lake Como. Using a combination of bus, metro, train, and even trekking, I’ll share practical tips and personal insights to help you make the most of your trip without breaking the bank.
Whether you’re a nature enthusiast or simply looking for an affordable day trip, this guide will show you how to explore one of Italy’s most beautiful destinations with ease and economy.
1 . From Via Marco D’Agrate to Centrale FS
We began our day at Via Marco D’Agrate, located in the southern part of Milan. To get to Milano Centrale, the main train station, we first took a local bus. Milan’s public transportation system is efficient and budget-friendly, making it easy to navigate the city. Make sure to purchase your bus ticket beforehand from a local tobacco shop or use the ATM Milano app for contactless payment.
After a short bus ride, we transferred to the metro. The Milan Metro system is extensive and straightforward. We took the Yellow Line (M3) from Brenta to Centrale FS, the main train station in Milan.
2. Taking the Train to Lake Como
At Milano Centrale, we boarded a Trenord train bound for Como San Giovanni. Trenord trains are a great option for budget travelers, with frequent departures and a journey time of about an hour. A one-way ticket costs around €4.80 if purchased in advance. Remember to validate your ticket before boarding to avoid fines.
3. Trekking to the Lake
Upon arriving at Como San Giovanni, we decided to add a bit of adventure to our trip by trekking to Lake Como. The walk from the train station to the lakefront is scenic and enjoyable, taking around 20-30 minutes.
This route allows you to soak in the charming streets of Como and discover some hidden gems along the way. Trekking not only saves money on transportation but also offers a unique perspective of the city.
4. Exploring the Area
There are plenty of free or low-cost activities to enjoy around Lake Como. We took a stroll along the lakefront promenade, visited the beautiful Villa Olmo gardens (free entry), and even took a dip in the lake at one of the public beaches. Exploring the charming town of Como and its surroundings doesn’t have to cost a lot – simply wandering the streets and enjoying the natural beauty is a treat in itself.
4.1. Visit Brunate - Experience panoramic views of the lake
Take the funicular from Como to Brunate for stunning panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains. The funicular ride is relatively inexpensive, costing around €5.50 for a round trip. Once in Brunate, you can enjoy a leisurely walk and visit the Volta Lighthouse for breathtaking vistas. If you’re up for it, consider hiking down from Brunate to Como for an adventurous and cost-free experience.
4.2. Explore Bellagio, Pearl of Lake Como.
Bellagio, often referred to as the “Pearl of Lake Como,” is a must-visit. From Como, you can take a ferry to Bellagio, with one-way tickets costing about €10. Once there, wander through the charming streets, enjoy the beautiful gardens of Villa Melzi (entry fee around €6), and soak in the stunning lake views. To save money, pack a picnic and find a picturesque spot to relax by the water.
4.3. Take a ferry ride to Varenna
Another beautiful town accessible by ferry from Como is Varenna. The ferry ride costs around €8 one-way. In Varenna, you can visit the picturesque Villa Monastero gardens (entry fee around €5) and take a leisurely stroll along the scenic lakeside promenade. Varenna is less crowded than Bellagio, offering a more tranquil experience.
4.4 Walk the Greenway del Lago di Como
For a scenic and cost-free activity, consider walking a section of the Greenway del Lago di Como. This well-marked trail stretches along the western shore of the lake, passing through charming villages, olive groves, and offering stunning views of the lake. It’s a great way to explore the area at your own pace and enjoy the natural beauty without spending a dime.
Additional Tips
