We began our day at our hotel on Via Capri, a charming area in Naples. To get to Piazza Garibaldi, the central train station, we took the local bus. Here’s a helpful tip if you’re new to Italy: the bus drivers typically won’t ask you for a fare. Instead, there are POS machines inside the bus that use NFC for contactless payments. You can also buy a pass card a day earlier from a local tobacco shop or newsstand, which can be more convenient.
The bus ride was not only convenient but also provided a nice view of the city. After getting off the bus, we walked a short distance to reach Piazza Garibaldi. If you’re carrying heavy luggage or want to save your energy for Pompeii, the bus is definitely the way to go. Once at Napoli Centrale (Piazza Garibaldi), we headed to the Circumvesuviana line, which offers hourly trains to Pompeii. This regional train is both economical and relatively quick, taking about 30-40 minutes to reach the Pompeii Scavi – Villa dei Misteri station. A one-way ticket costs around €2.80, making it an ideal choice for budget travelers. Remember to validate your ticket before boarding to avoid fines – it’s a small step but an important one.

We were fortunate enough to visit on the first Sunday of the month, which meant we didn’t have to pay the standard entrance fee of €16. The site offers free entry on this day, allowing us to save money while still experiencing the incredible history of Pompeii. If you can plan your trip around this time, it’s a fantastic way to cut costs. Additionally, if you’re an EU citizen aged 18-25, you can enter for just €2 on other days, and children under 18 are free, so always bring your ID to take advantage of these discounts.

Food within the archaeological site can be pricey. We opted to pack a picnic with some local delicacies we picked up from a grocery store in Naples.
