Moving to Portugal

I met João back in 2015 when he volunteered in Nairobi on a social project. Over time, our friendship grew, and in January 2016, I flew from Nairobi to Porto to pay him a visit. That trip turned out to be the beginning of a life-changing journey.

Porto, the second-largest city in Portugal, has a population of around 240,000 within the city and over 1.7 million in the greater metropolitan area. The city is known for its charm, rich culture, and vibrant traditions. The people here are warm, welcoming, and deeply passionate about their heritage. They celebrate life with Fado music, feast on the iconic Francesinha sandwich, and light up the streets during São João, a midsummer festival filled with laughter, color, and joy.

Stepping into Porto felt like walking into a living postcard. The cobblestone streets, the iconic Ribeira district overlooking the Douro River, and the historic Dom Luís I Bridge create an atmosphere that’s hard to put into words. It’s a place where history and modernity blend seamlessly, where every corner has a story to tell.

During my visit, I was captivated by the simplicity and beauty of life here. The slower pace, the sunsets over the river, and the genuine kindness of the people made Porto feel like a second home. It wasn’t long before an opportunity to study here came my way, and I decided to take the leap.

Since then, I’ve been living in Porto for seven years. Over this time, I’ve come to appreciate even more about the city—the endless opportunities for personal growth, the affordable cost of living, and the sense of safety and community. Whether it’s enjoying a pastel de nata with coffee at a local café or taking a leisurely stroll along the Douro, life in Porto is an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything.

Porto has become more than just a city to me; it’s home. It’s a place where my dreams found a path, and my journey continues to unfold. If you’re considering a new adventure, Porto might just be the perfect place to start.
